Rail disruption following cable theft in Shenfield

According to an article published by the BBC on 11 October 2025, cables were stripped from a rail line near a major junction in Shenfield, Essex. The theft resulted in a loss of signalling and blocked lines heading toward London Liverpool Street.

The BBC reports that the incident caused widespread disruption for weekend passengers, affecting services between Shenfield, Romford, and London, as well as intercity routes between Norwich, Ipswich, and the capital. Lines serving Clacton-on-Sea, Colchester, Braintree Town, and Southend Victoria were also impacted, alongside Elizabeth line services between Stratford and Shenfield.

Network Rail and British Transport Police teams were deployed to replace the stolen infrastructure, allowing trains to resume by Saturday afternoon. Greater Anglia stated that the theft necessitated delays, alterations, and cancellations to restore the timetable. Passengers affected by the service changes were advised that they could claim compensation for delays and use Saturday travel tickets for Sunday journeys instead.

Ensure all critical infrastructure and utility access points are secured with high-quality locks and monitored by surveillance systems to deter unauthorized access.
