Attempted robbery at a Coatbridge shop
According to an article published on 6 August 2024 by Dailyrecord, a shop in Woodside Street, Coatbridge, was the target of an attempted robbery. Paul McDowell, 21, entered the premises with his face partially covered and demanded money from a staff member.
Dailyrecord reports that the employee recognized the assailant as a regular customer. The suspect fled the scene empty-handed after being confronted by another staff member who emerged from a storeroom. McDowell later admitted to assault and attempted robbery at the shop, which occurred on July 18 of the previous year.
The defense stated that McDowell, a first offender, was motivated by a drug debt. At Airdrie Sheriff Court, he was sentenced to an 18-month social work supervision order and 180 hours of unpaid community work. Allegations regarding the possession of a weapon were removed from the charge.
Business owners are encouraged to maintain clear lines of sight and ensure staff are trained in de-escalation techniques to improve workplace security.
