Smash and grab incident at Newton Abbot antique shop
According to an article published by Devonlive on 31 July 2024, an antique shop in Newton Abbot was targeted in a smash and grab burglary. The business, known as The Attic, located on Union Street, was raided during the early morning of 2 March.
Devonlive reports that the perpetrator, 42-year-old Daniel Anderson, destroyed the shop’s large front window to gain access to the interior. The incident resulted in £1,000 worth of damage to the property and the theft of valuables estimated at £6,015. Police identified the offender through DNA evidence found at the scene.
The shop owner, 96-year-old George Gillman, stated that the theft represented a significant loss of capital for his business, noting that this was the third such incident within a year. While some items were recovered, many of the stolen goods held personal and sentimental value. Following a guilty plea, the defendant received a ten-month suspended sentence, which includes an alcohol treatment requirement and rehabilitation days.
Business owners are encouraged to review their security measures, including the installation of reinforced glass or security shutters, to better protect storefronts from forced entry.
