Attempted robbery at Ebbw Vale jeweller
According to an article published on 10 July 2024 by Southwalesargus, a man attempted to rob Gus Jones Jewellers in Ebbw Vale using an imitation firearm. The incident occurred in May, when 44-year-old Gareth Heard entered the shop and demanded cash from the till.
Southwalesargus reports that staff members confronted the individual during the robbery attempt. One staff member, in particular, has been unable to return to work due to the lasting psychological impact of the encounter, describing feelings of constant nervousness and anxiety. Following the incident, police were able to keep the suspect on the phone while they arrived at the scene to make an arrest.
Gareth Heard, from the Blackwood area, was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court on 3 July to four years and eight months in prison for attempted robbery and possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear. During sentencing, Judge Solomon Kahn noted the terrifying nature of the event for the employees, who were unaware that the weapon was an imitation.
