Serial offender sentenced for Tyneside crime spree

According to an article published by Chroniclelive on 2 June 2024, Stephen Leech, 36, has been jailed for over three years following a series of burglaries across Tyneside. Leech pleaded guilty to multiple offences, including dwelling burglary, theft of a motor vehicle, and non-dwelling burglary.

Chroniclelive reports that Leech’s offences included breaking into a private home, where a resident woke to find him in her bedroom. The victim reported that her iPhone was stolen and that the incident has caused her significant distress. During his crime spree, which occurred last year, Leech also targeted a student accommodation building, a camper van, and a pub in Newcastle, where he caused approximately £2,000 in damage while attempting to access a till.

Newcastle Crown Court heard that Leech, who has 37 previous convictions, was arrested after being seen entering a communal area of a student building. He appeared for sentencing via video link from HMP Durham.
