Intruder enters Barnstaple home

According to an article published on 25 April 2024 by Devonlive, a residential burglary occurred in Barnstaple on 24 January. A single mother was woken at approximately 4:50 am by the sound of a mirror being knocked over in her bedroom.

Devonlive reports that the victim observed a silhouette leaving the room before the intruder returned two minutes later, crawling on the floor. After the resident confronted the individual and requested he leave, the suspect exited the property. Police later apprehended 42-year-old Dean Hawkins while he was cycling away from the scene in possession of stolen electronic devices and a handbag.

Hawkins, who has a history of 98 previous crimes, pleaded guilty to the burglary and an additional charge of assaulting an emergency worker. He was subsequently sentenced to two and a half years in prison. The victim reported significant emotional distress following the incident, noting that she has struggled to sleep and feels unable to trust others. The court heard that the defendant has since expressed remorse for his actions.

Ensure all doors and windows are securely locked before going to sleep to deter unauthorized entry.
