Retail stores targeted in Wiltshire
According to an article published by the BBC on 4 January 2024, two retail stores in Wiltshire were burgled by a group of thieves armed with bats and an axe. The incidents resulted in the theft of more than £8,000 worth of cigarettes and tobacco.
The first burglary occurred at the Costcutters store in St Margaret’s Mead, Marlborough. Approximately twenty minutes later, in the early hours, the same group targeted the Spar store in North Street, Pewsey. The owners of the Spar store reported being alerted to the break-in while it was in progress, noting that members of the public had contacted the police during the event.
Wiltshire Police confirmed that their response officers arrived on the scene within nine minutes. A dedicated burglary team is currently investigating the incidents, and the force is appealing for any witnesses to come forward. DS Gareth Snoad stated that burglary remains a priority for the force and acknowledged the concern these events have caused within the rural community.
Business owners are encouraged to regularly review their security measures and ensure that alarm systems are fully operational to deter potential intruders.
