Retail thefts lead to prison sentence in Long Eaton

According to an article published by Derbyshiretimes on 4 April 2024, a persistent thief has been sentenced to 26 weeks in prison following a series of retail thefts in Long Eaton. Shaun Griffiths, 43, admitted to stealing nearly £300 worth of protein powder from a Home Bargains store on Tamworth Road on 3 February. He later targeted an Asda store on Midland Street on 19 February, where he stole Pokemon cards, baby milk, and beer.

Derbyshiretimes reports that when confronted by a security guard at the Asda location, Griffiths threatened to stab the staff member with a dirty needle. Following his appearance at Derby Magistrates’ Court on 21 March, Griffiths was jailed and issued a three-year criminal behaviour order, which prohibits him from entering the Midland Street Asda and mandates that he leave retail premises when directed by staff. Neighbourhood Investigation Officer Amy-Jayne Statham noted that the offender had repeatedly targeted local businesses and showed no regard for the consequences of his actions.

Businesses are encouraged to review their security protocols and provide staff with training on how to safely manage confrontations with shoplifters.
