A thief has caused £5,800 of damage breaking into Cardinal Hume Catholic School in Gateshead, according to an article published on 9 April 2025. Chroniclelive reports that the incident involved a cleaner who worked at the school, with his partner reportedly assisting by pretending to clean the premises.
The break-in highlights a vulnerability in institutional security when trusted staff members are involved. Schools and other community facilities should strengthen vetting procedures, restrict access credentials, and implement security monitoring during cleaning and maintenance hours to prevent unauthorized activity.
