Attempted ATM theft in Clavering

According to an article published on 18 March 2025 by Essexlive, a man has been sentenced to eight years in prison following a failed attempt to steal an ATM from a shop in Clavering. The incident occurred on 3 December 2023 at a business located on Stortford Road.

Essexlive reports that Tommy Mitchell, 25, used a stolen Land Rover Defender to attempt to pull the ATM from the premises after cutting through the shop’s shutters. The attempt was unsuccessful, and Mitchell fled the scene on foot, leaving the vehicle behind. The burglary caused significant damage to the shop, forcing it to close for four days while repairs were conducted.

Police identified Mitchell through DNA evidence recovered from the steering wheel of the abandoned vehicle and a serial number on a tow strap used during the crime. Mitchell later admitted to the offence and was sentenced at Aylesbury Crown Court. Authorities noted that the shop serves as a vital resource for the local community.

Business owners are encouraged to ensure that security systems are regularly tested and that physical barriers are reinforced to deter unauthorized access.
