On 2 April 2015, the Hatton Garden safe deposit vault in London was burgled by a gang who drilled through concrete walls to access valuables inside, according to Thesun and Kentonline. The heist, which became known as the Hatton Garden raid, was carried out by multiple perpetrators working as an organized group.

The ringleader of the operation was Brian Reader, who masterminded the burglary. According to Kentonline, Reader, who was described as the heist’s mastermind, died aged 84. Another participant in the raid, Michael Seed, was reportedly mistakenly freed from jail after officials wrongly miscalculated his 10-year sentence, as reported by Thesun.

The burglary highlighted the vulnerability of secure facilities to determined criminal gangs with specialized equipment and planning. Safe deposit vault operators should maintain vigilant security protocols, including regular inspections of vault structures, upgraded drilling-resistant materials, and comprehensive alarm and monitoring systems to prevent similar intrusions.
