Burglars broke into Dewsbury Town Hall and stole the mayor’s ceremonial chains during a raid at about 20:15 GMT on Sunday, according to reports published on 2 February 2026. West Yorkshire Police confirmed the theft of the historic 129-year-old mayoral chains, which hold significant symbolic value for the town.
The incident prompted a police response, with an arrest made in connection with the theft, according to BBC reporting. The ceremonial chains are an important part of Dewsbury’s civic heritage and their recovery remains a priority for local authorities.
