Repeat burglar sentenced for raids on Annfield Plain store
According to an article published on 14 July 2024 by Northernecho, a 30-year-old man has been sentenced to 45 months in prison following two robberies at a store in Annfield Plain, County Durham.
Jonathan McKee targeted Ahmed’s News ‘n’ Booze on Catherine Terrace on April 22 and April 23. During the first incident, the defendant stole scratch cards worth £18 after being challenged by staff. He returned to the premises the following day armed with a screwdriver, where he pushed a slush machine at a staff member before fleeing with between £100 and £200. Both incidents were captured on the shop’s internal CCTV system.
Durham Crown Court heard that the defendant, who was under the influence of alcohol and drugs at the time, admitted to charges of robbery, theft, and possession of an offensive weapon. The shopkeeper has requested a restraining order against the defendant, citing fears of future targeting. In mitigation, the defense noted that the defendant has been working with recovery services while in custody.
Business owners are encouraged to maintain clear sightlines and ensure security systems are regularly tested to deter potential intruders.
