Assault at Sports Direct in Shrewsbury

According to an article published by the Shropshirestar on 11 November 2025, a man has been jailed for robbery following an incident at a Sports Direct store in Meole Brace, Shrewsbury. On 11 June 2025, Aaron Bate and two other individuals entered the premises and attempted to leave with £607 worth of clothing.

Shropshirestar reports that when a store supervisor attempted to prevent the theft by switching the doors to manual control, Bate barged the staff member to the ground to escape. The victim sustained lower back pain as a result of the encounter. Bate, 33, was later arrested and subsequently pleaded guilty to robbery at Shrewsbury Crown Court. During the proceedings, it was noted that the defendant had a significant history of prior convictions.

Judge Trevor Meegan sentenced Bate to 21 months in prison, noting the necessity of punishing and deterring such criminal activity. The victim reported that the incident has left her feeling anxious about the possibility of future confrontations.

Business owners are encouraged to review their security protocols and staff training procedures to ensure the safety of employees during potential theft incidents.
