Two burglaries reported at Machen supermarket

According to an article published on 19 April 2024 by Walesonline, a 37-year-old man has been sentenced to 72 weeks in prison for two commercial burglaries at a Co-Op store in Machen, Caerphilly. The incidents took place on 7 September and 10 September 2022.

During the first break-in, the offender gained access by smashing a window with a crowbar and stole over £6,000 in cash and stamps. He returned to the same premises three days later, again using a crowbar to enter, and stole an additional £700 from the till and a charity box. According to Walesonline, the total financial loss to the business amounted to £7,676, with an additional £1,848 in property damage.

The perpetrator was identified through DNA evidence found at the scene and CCTV footage. He pleaded guilty to two counts of commercial burglary at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court. The judge noted the impact of the crimes on a valuable local business during the sentencing hearing.

Business owners are encouraged to regularly review and upgrade their physical security measures, including reinforced window coverings and alarm systems, to deter unauthorized access.
